Free printables
Three things worth having on paper. No email box, no signup, no watermark — download them, print them, hand them round.
These are the three pages people ask for most often. They are free, they are not gated behind an email address, and you are welcome to print them for a class, a staff room or a fridge door.
The fluency benchmark chart
The full Hasbrouck & Tindal oral reading fluency table — grades 1 to 6, fall, winter and spring, five percentiles each. One page. This is the table most US schools measure against, and the one worth pinning up if you only print one thing.
The web version adds what each percentile actually means and three things the table will not tell you.
Sight words by grade
Download the sight word lists (PDF)
All 220 Dolch service words, grouped by the grade they are usually taught in: Pre-primer, Primer, First, Second and Third. Good for sending home, cutting into cards, or ticking off.
The web version adds how to teach them so they transfer into actual reading, which flashcards alone famously do not.
Reading milestones, preschool to Grade 3
Download the milestones guide (PDF)
What reading looks like at each stage from age three to nine, how wide "normal" really is, and the specific signs that are worth acting on rather than waiting out. Useful for parent evenings and for anyone being asked "should I be worried?"
The web version has the same content with the benchmark numbers alongside.
Using these
- Print and share them freely, including for a whole class or school.
- Link to this page rather than hotlinking the PDFs — they get updated.
- Teachers and tutors are welcome to hand them to families.
- They carry our address in the footer. That is the only thing we ask.
Doing the measurement
If you want to take a fluency measurement rather than just read about one, the words per minute calculator does the arithmetic and the percentile from one minute of reading. It runs in the page — nothing is sent anywhere.
Free chart from myfluentreader.com — reading fluency benchmarks, a words-per-minute calculator and the full sight-word lists, free and without signing up.
And when you want it measured for you
My Fluent Reader listens while your child reads out loud and works all of this out automatically — words a minute, accuracy and expression, against the same benchmarks in that chart.
